Oneofthemostimportantpurposesofanti-discriminationlawistoensurethatprejudicedoesnotimpermissiblydisadvantagecertaingroupsinsociety.Byspecificallyprotectingthesegroupsunderthelaw,policymakersseektopromotesocialharmonyandalsoeconomicdevelopment.Manyofthemajoranti-discriminationlawsintheUnitedStateswereenactedunderCongress’spowertoregulateinterstatecommerce.Thus,theselawsarenotseenasprovidinganyunfairaddedbenefittominoritygroups,rathertheyareseenasnecessary“corrective”measurestofightdamagingprejudicesinsociety.
25.Whyshouldpeoplecareaboutgayissues?
Therearetwomajorreasonspeopleshouldcareaboutgayissues.First,becausetheyaregaymenandwomenallovertheworld,irrationalprejudiceagainstthemcanbeextremelydestructivetosociety.Prejudicepreventsthegaymenandwomenfromusingtheirtalentsintheworkplace,theclassroom,andthesportsfield,anditleadstoignoranceaboutandthespreadofdestructivediseaseliketheAIDSvirus.Acknowledginggaysandlesbiansandunderstandingtheissuestheyfaceisthebestwaytocombatthisirrationalprejudiceandpromoteharmonyinsociety.
Second,whethertheyknowitornot,nearlyeveryoneknowsandcaresforsomeonegay.Recognizingthatfactandacceptingthosepeoplewithanopenmindcanmakeatremendousdifferenceinthatperson’slifeastheystrugglewiththeirownidentityandtheunfortunateprejudicefromothersources.
