From the Knights of the Round Table to Indiana Jones’ “Last Crusade[宗教戰爭],” fictional[虛構的] characters, and even some real ones, have been searching for the Holy[神聖的] Grail for nearly 900 years.

According to legend, the Holy Grail is the cup that Jesus drank from at the Last Supper, and it’s believed to give whoever drinks from it eternal[永恒的] life.

These days, the term “Holy Grail” has become so common it is often used to describe a difficult quest[尋求] for a long-awaited goal. But does it really exist?

It may surprise you to learn that the concept of the Holy Grail did not originate[起源] in the Bible. Though the Bible does mention the cup Jesus used during the Last Supper, it doesn’t play a prominent[顯著的] role or stand out as a miraculous[奇跡的] object. In fact, the legend of the Holy Grail was born in quite another place, the medieval[中世紀的] romantic adventures, written about King Arthur and his legendary[傳奇的] court[朝臣].

In the late 12th century, building on even older Celtic注myths[神話], a French poet named Chrétien De Troyes first wrote of a mystical[神秘的] vessel[器皿] known as “The Grail.”Chrétien didn’t explicitly[明確地] connect the vessel to the Last Supper, and he didn’t even refer to it as holy. In fact, in his version of the story, the grail wasn’t even a cup at all, but more of a serving dish.
