A walk through a field of gold, the golden grain of quinoa that is; Bolivia’s staple, turned global health food star.
Augustine Flores (Farmer): (via translator) This is the grain of gold—quinoa—and this is a special variety of red quinoa.
For three generations Augustine Flores’family has tended their fields of Royal Quinoa, the most sought-after variety of the Andean grain, which grows on Bolivia’s semi-arid plateaus, 3,700 meters above sea level.
Quinoa has nourished the Indians of the Andes for millennia, but in the past two decades it’s also become a food of choice for First-World gourmets, prized for its high protein count and 2)versatility. Its export sale price has tripled since 2007.
Augustine: We export to countries like Australia, England, France; actually everything you see over here will fill two containers headed tomorrow to the United States.
This building houses the fruit of the labours of 5,000 Bolivian farmers. Their cooperative collects, selects, washes, dries and packages quinoa for export. Last year Bolivia exported more than 50,000 tons of the grain, all certified organic, for a total revenue of roughly $45 million.
