After experiencing the whole unit of civil rights movement and Vietnam War in American Study, each of as was asked to make a final presentation of how we understood and perceived the two big events. To do this,Mr.Gross gave us a list of songs which were all created by the years of Vietnam War.We were allowed to choose one of them and its background as the main idea of the presentation.Students in the class were grouped into five to cooperate on the project. We were given only two periods to finish the project including the speeches, introduction sand videos.
Making presentations was nothing new to me.For almost each sub-ject except for math and science, presentation is so common just like arule in American classes.Unlike such kind of activities we do in China, presentations in American high school are much more often.usually, when students finish a unit, teachers would possibly require them to make a PowerPoint presentation to show how well they have actually known the lessons.Presentation scores stand a great percentage of final grades and sometimes it might be even more important than exams.
American Study is the hardest subject of all.Comparing to the presentation of other classes, the project also seems harder and larger. It was my first time of doing the American study presentations and I al-most have got no definitions of this new mode of presentation.I-Chau,Zhou Fang and I had actively promoted to be in the same group before we were arranged by Mr.Gross.To Mr.Gross’s surprise,we were the only one made up of three foreign members. He once showed his worry that the project of American Study was in need of the knowing of American culture besides English understanding of the texts. He asked us if we would like an American student to join to help.I-Chau and I really hesitated because we understood what Mr.Gross meant by.How-ever,we refused, eventually. We said to him that we could do it.
As foreign students, aside from the language hindrance of giving speeches and making introductions in public, doing the videos by using the English programs that I have never known is the first challenge.
