The influence of the world would make no change in the lying dragon. He woulddo nothing merely to secure his fame. He can live, withdrawn from the world, without regret; he can experience disapproval without trouble of mind.——from The Record of Wen Yan, Qian
Modern interpretation: One should not be easily changed by the bad atmospherearound him. It is wise to withdraw temporarily without being discouraged as he is
not understood by others.
Moral: Don’t take a hurried expression or explanation. Don’t crave personal fame andgain. But keep calm and unperturbed before them.
Glossary: There are eight guas (the trigrams) in Zhou Yi (The Book of Changes), whichAre called Jing Guas ( guas in the Text). By duplicating the eight trigrams, sixty four
hexagrams are derived and called Bie Guas ( guas other than the eight trigrams in the
Text).
