When three men are walking together, the number is diminished by one; when one is walking alone, he finds his friend.——- from The Third Line, Divided, Sun

Modern interpretation: When three men are walking together, one would be pushed out. When one is walking by himself, he would think of being accompanied.

Moral: Unity is strength. Jealousy is a weak point of human nature to be overcome.

Glossary: Sun is a hexagram composed of the lower trigram Dui and the upper trigram Gen. The original three lines are all solid lines of Qian, emblematic of three people. As they become broken in Gen, the broken lines symbolize that a man is diminished. In the upper part, the topmost of the three broken lines of Kun becomes solid, symbolizing that a man walking alone gets his friend as indicated in the fourth and fifth lines.
