狐狸邀請鶴共進晚餐，然而他並沒有真心誠意地為客人準備什麼精美的飯菜，隻是用豆子做了一點湯，並把湯放在一個很淺的石盤子中。鶴要費很大的勁才能把湯喝到嘴裏，可是湯又會馬上從他的長嘴中流出來。看著鶴笨拙的樣子，狐狸非常開心。後來，鶴回請狐狸吃晚餐。他把食物放在了一隻長頸小口的瓶子裏，自己可以很容易地吃到食物，而狐狸卻隻能眼睜睜地看著。狐狸受到了應得的回報。
