有一次，獅子正在美美地睡大覺，這時一隻老鼠偏偏在他的身上爬來爬去。獅子被弄醒後一把抓住老鼠，就要把他吞下肚去。老鼠苦苦哀求獅子饒命，並且許諾今後一定報答他。獅子覺得非常可笑，不過還是把老鼠放了。誰知不久之後，老鼠就有了報恩的機會。原來，有幾個獵人抓住了獅子，並用繩子緊緊地把他綁在樹上。聽到獅子呻吟，老鼠就馬上趕來，用自己的牙齒咬斷了繩子，救出了獅子。老鼠對獅子說： “當初我說要報答你的時候，你還不屑一顧，取笑我。現在你應該明白了吧，連一隻小小的老鼠也是懂得，並且有能力知恩圖報的。 ”
