一頭獅子年老力衰，已經沒有能力自己獵取食物了。不甘心這樣死去的獅子想到了一條 “妙計 ”。他返回自己的洞裏，躺下來裝病，並把自己生病的消息讓更多的動物知道。善良的小動物們紛紛來探望獅子，表達自己的關切之情。可是接待他們的隻有獅子的血盆大口。
許多動物就這樣消失了，狐狸逐漸明白了獅子的陰謀。於是他站在洞外很遠的地方詢問獅子的病情。獅子回答他： “我的病情還好，不是非常嚴重，但是你為什麼站在外麵呢，請進來和我說會話吧！ ”狐狸立即明白了他的用意，回答道： “不，謝謝您的好意了，我是不會進去的，因為我注意到這裏隻有動物們進去的腳印，而沒有返回的腳印！ ”
