一個隻說實話的人和一個隻說謊話的人在路上行走。偶然間,他們來到了猿猴王國。一隻自封為王的猿猴想知道自己在人類心目中的地位,於是就命令手下把這兩個人抓住,向他們詢問對自己的評價。同時他還下令,其他的猿猴必須像人類的朝廷儀式那樣分站在他的左右兩側。他自己坐在中間的寶座上。
一切準備就緒後,他吩咐手下把那兩人押到麵前來,問他們: “先生們,在你們眼中,我怎麼樣呢? ”總是說謊的人回答說: “很顯然,你是一位最有權威的國王。 ”“那我旁邊站著的這些猿猴呢? ”那人連忙回答: “他們都是你們王國的棟梁之材,都是達官貴人。 ”那猿猴國王聽了他的這些話,感到非常滿意,就賞賜了說謊者很多禮物。
那位總是說真話的人看到這種情形,心想:說謊話都可以得到如此多的賞賜,如果我說真話,一定能夠得到更多。這時,猿猴國王將目光轉向了他,示意他來回答問題。老實人說: “您就是一隻猿猴,站在您周圍的也是猿猴。我發誓,我說的是實話。”聽了他的回答,猿猴國王惱羞成怒,把說真話的人交給手下隨意處置。
真理往往得不到認同。
