狼跟在羊群後麵很長一段時間，但是沒有做出任何傷害羊群的行為。剛開始的時候，牧羊人還對狼保持高度警惕，拿著木棒時刻注視著他。
就這樣一天天過去了，狼始終跟在羊群後麵，沒有任何進攻的行為。漸漸地，牧人就把狼當做了羊群的守護神了。一天，他要去城裏辦事，就完全把羊群托付給狼，然後就放心地離開了。狼馬上意識到機會來了，於是他就肆無忌憚地吃掉了很多羊，還把剩下的羊全部咬死了。牧人回來，發現他的羊全都死了，痛心疾首地說： “我這真是活該啊！我怎麼會放心地把羊交給狼來看管呢 ?”
不要把寶貴的東西交給自己的敵人。
