The River Flows in a Mural
Sunlight that dries out the riverbed
Why do my eyes stay moist in its glare
Sandstorms in the weather report——still one or two cities away
Take a taxi to the plaza, and listen to whats in the wind
Along the way,a thousand human eyes
Resemble tadpoles in shallow water
The river is narrow—a mark on a yellowed map
Interrupt your reading here water plants
What about those exposed lives
How will they cover their shyness?
Through the dappled hours of morning
I sit quiet before a river in a mural
A fantasy of bathing comes over my body
A pine tree on the bank lets drops of resin fall
Embedding me,and along with me the river
(Tr. Denis Mair)
Quiet Watery Sounds of the River
The year and month and day recede from memory
When I leaned on the bridge railing, merging with the night
My hearts stillness was like a vow
A city has taken shape around the bridge…a few trees there
Are listed by the province as protected species
Back and forth I walk over the bridge, still search
For those quiet watery sounds.
