一九八五年開始發表作品，有小說、評論、報告文學三百餘萬字麵世。主要作品有長篇小說《北方城郭》、《突出重圍》，長篇報告文學《紅太陽白太陽》等。曾獲中宣部“五個一”工程獎，全國優秀圖書編輯獎、第三屆國家圖書獎提名獎、第八屆解放軍文藝獎、《當代》文學獎、第十屆中國圖書獎、首屆解放軍圖書獎等獎項。《突出重圍》入選十部獻禮長篇小說，並被改編成同名電視劇作為二〇〇〇年開年大戲在中央台一套黃金時間播出。
