第18章 The Prince’s Revenge王子複仇記(1)(1 / 3)

.This_is_the_sad_story_of_Hamlet,_young_Prince_of_Denmark,_whose_father_died_two_months_before_the_story_begins._Hamlet’s_father_was_King_of_Denmark_and_Hamlet_was_his_only_son._The_king_died_a_strange_death_while_he_was_sleeping_in_the_garden_of_his_castle._It_was_believed_that_he_had_been_bitten_to_death_by_a_poisonous_snake._He_was_such_a_wise_and_kind_king_that_he_was_loved_by_all_the_people_in_the_nation._His_son,_Hamlet,_of_course,_loved_him_far_more_than_anyone_else_in_the_world.

.Hamlet_was_so_sad_and_sorrowful_that_he_never_stopped_wearing_black_clothes._There_was_something_else_which_made_Hamlet_even_sadder._His_mother,_Gertrude,_married_Hamlet’s_uncle,_Claudius,_who_was_a_brother_of_the_late_king._After_Hamlet’s_father_died,_Claudius_became_King_of_Denmark_and_married_Gertrude._Young_Hamlet_did_not_like_him_because_he_was_not_as_wise_and_kind_as_his_father._He_was_a_man_of_unkindly_character._Hamlet_did_not_in_the_least_want_his_mother_to_marry_such_a_man._He_became_angry_with_both_of_them_and_came_to_despise_his_mother_as_well_as_his_uncle._

.The_bell_of_the_castle_was_ringing._It_was_exactly_midnight._Suddenly_a_ghost_in_the_form_of_the_late_king_appeared_in_the_darkness._It_looked_pale_and_sad._Looking_at_the_ghost,_the_two_guards_of_the_castle_and_Horatio,_Hamlet’s_best_friend,_were_surprised_and_terrified._They_wondered_if_something_bad_was_going_to_happen_in_Denmark._They_decided_to_tell_their_prince_what_they_had_seen.

.The_next_day_they_went_to_Hamlet_and_told_him_that_they_had_seen_the_ghost_of_King_Hamlet._Hamlet_doubted_it_at_first,_but_wanted_to_make_sure_himself._He_asked_them_to_take_him_to_see_the_ghost_that_night._They_agreed._Late_at_night_Hamlet,_Horatio_and_one_of_the_guards_went_to_the_top_of_the_walls._It_was_very_cold_and_dark_there._Some_time_after_they_got_there,_the_ghost_in_armor_suddenly_appeared_out_of_the_darkness._As_his_friends_had_told_him,_Hamlet_saw_that_the_ghost_was_exactly_like_his_dead_father.

.He_called_out,_“King,_Father!_Why_did_you_come_here_out_of_the_grave?”

.The_ghost_did_not_answer_him,_but_looked_at_him_sadly_and_made_a_sign_for_him_to_follow._His_friends_did_not_want_to_let_Hamlet_follow_the_ghost_because_they_thought_it_might_be_an_evil_spirit_and_do_something_bad_to_him._But_he_did_follow_the_ghost._While_Hamlet_and_the_ghost_walked_away_into_the_darkness,_his_friends_had_to_wait_anxiously_there_worrying_about_his_safe_return.

.At_the_end_of_the_walls_of_the_castle_the_ghost_stopped_and_began_to_talk_to_Hamlet,_“I_am_the_ghost_of_your_father._I_wanted_to_rule_Denmark_peacefully_until_you_grew_up_and_became_king_after_me._But_two_months_ago,_while_I_was_sleeping_in_the_beautiful_garden_of_the_castle,_my_brother_Claudius_came_and_put_poison_into_my_ear._I_was_instantly_killed._Hamlet!_Be_brave_and_kill_him_for_me._But_never_kill_or_hurt_my_wife,_for_she_is_your_mother._Let_her_repent_for_what_she_has_done._That_is_enough_for_her._What_I_have_told_you_is_true._I_tell_you_again._I_was_not_killed_by_a_poisonous_snake,_but_by_my_brother_Claudius._Never_forget_what_I_have_told_you,_my_dear_son._Goodbye,_Hamlet!”

.Then_the_ghost_disappeared_into_the_mist_of_the_dark_sky._Upon_hearing_this,_Hamlet_became_excited_and_was_even_more_furious_with_Claudius_and_his_mother._He_made_up_his_mind_to_kill_his_uncle_and_let_his_mother_repent_for_her_sins.

.Hamlet’s_friends_were_anxious_about_him_and_came_to_look_for_him._They_found_Hamlet_kneeling_down_and_looking_up_at_the_dark_sky_praying_to_God._Hamlet_noticed_them_coming_to_him._He_stood_up_and_sincerely_asked_them_not_to_tell_anyone_what_had_happened_that_night._They_all_agreed_and_made_a_firm_promise_not_to_tell_anyone_about_it,_swearing_on_Hamlet’s_sword.

.That_very_night_Hamlet_decided_to_pretend_that_he_had_gone_mad_in_order_to_have_a_better_chance_to_kill_Claudius._He_decided_not_to_tell_his_plan_to_any_of_his_friends_except_Horatio.

.Since_Hamlet_saw_the_ghost,_he_had_often_thought_of_his_dead_father_and_of_his_promise_to_the_ghost._He_became_sadder_each_day._He_was_not_a_young,_merry_prince_as_he_used_to_be._Before_his_father’s_death,_he_was_interested_in_many_things,_such_as_books,_art,_music_and_plays._But_now_he_gave_them_all_up._To_everyone,_he_seemed_to_act_very_strangely._He_became_rude_to_everyone_in_the_castle_and_behaved_like_a_mad_man.

.He_hardly_ever_spoke_to_Ophelia,_a_beautiful_lady_whom_he_had_deeply_loved._Before,_they_would_talk_happily_and_take_walks_in_the_woods_near_the_castle._He_would_talk_to_her_so_sweetly_and_gently_that_Ophelia_was_deeply_in_love_with_him._But_now_he_was_quite_different._Therefore,_Polonius,_Ophelia’s_father,_did_not_want_his_daughter_to_love_Hamlet_anymore_because_of_his_strange_behavior.

.One_day_Hamlet_came_to_Ophelia,_who_was_knitting_in_her_room,_and_spoke_wildly_to_her._He_appeared_halfnaked,_wearing_a_dirty_shirt_with_no_hat_on_his_head._She_gave_back_all_the_letters_and_valuable_rings_that_she_had_received_from_Hamlet.

.“I_will_not_meet_you_anymore,”_she_said_to_him._Hamlet_left_her,_feeling_even_more_miserable.

.She_told_her_father_everything_that_had_occurred_in_her_room._When_Polonius_heard_this_from_his_daughter,_he_believed_he_knew_what_had_made_Hamlet_go_mad._He_thought_that_Hamlet_had_gone_mad_because_of_his_love_for_Ophelia._Polonius_went_to_Claudius_and_Gertrude_to_let_them_know_what_caused_Hamlet’s_madness._He_told_them_that_the_love_affair_between_Hamlet_and_Ophelia_was_the_true_cause_of_his_madness.
