物理學家愛因斯坦（Albert Einstein, 1879-1955）對人類最偉大的貢獻是他創立的狹義相對論和廣義相對論（The Special and General Theories of Relativity）。他在三十歲時已在國際學術界有一定地位，卻仍未獲聘大學教席。法國數學家普旺加萊（Henri Poincaré, 1854-1912）與鐳（radium）元素的發現者居裏夫人（Marie Curie, 1869-1934）聯名向瑞士蘇黎世聯邦技術學院（Federal Institute of Technology at Zurich）寫了本推薦信後，愛因斯坦於1912年獲該學院聘任。
