Eight years ago in all parts of Ningxia 38Grassland Observation Stations were set up to explore the correlated regular pattern between the fertility of various types of steppe and the climatic change,according to which rational carrying capacity was stipulated.This work was performed under the supervising of the grassland stations of various counties.By confinement or semiconfinement feeding,grazing intensity was reduced on seriously-degraded grassland.

3.Carrying out the mode of producing of seasonal Animal husbandry

The sexual structure of sheep flock was adjusted and the number of proper-year-old ewes was increased in order to be adapted to temperate zones.Every available means was used to make ewes give birth to more lambs in a year.Full use was made of enough grass in warm seasons to fatten lambs fast.Just before winter a large amount of fattened lambs were slaughtered to be provided to markets to reduce the grazing intensity of rangeland in cold seasons.By this the economic effect of production of grassland agriculture was increased.It has been proved from experiment that the live weight of a ten-month-old sheep is equal to 70per cent of that of a three-year-old sheep and each ten-month-old sheep averagely produces 15kg of mutton.As wethers of different years turn out 1kg of mutton,they respectively consume the amount of hay as follows:16.6kg per ten month-old lamb,20.5kg per two-year-old sheep,30.7kg per three-year-old sheep,40.4kg per four-year-old sheep,47.7kg per five-year-old sheep.So except that the lambs of about forty days were normally slaughtered in proper proportion to supply high-quality furs,a proper amount of fattened lambs of ten months were slaughtered as well for sale to speed up the raising turnover,raise economic beneficial results and make rational use of grassland.

4.Rotational grazing in divided areas

The Yanchi Grassland Experiment Station divided 112hectares of rangeland (of which the available area amounted to 93ha)into twelve regions,six regions being used for rotational grazing in warm seasons,60days per region,two regions for making hay as supplementary forage in winter,the rest needing over drilling and improving and then being gradually used for rotational grazing.It has been shown after six year’s research that:1)the grazing capacity of grassland has been raised by 1.5times over the control;2)calculated in the unit if animal products produced per hectare of grassland,the average units of three years are 40.67;3)the net primary fertility of rangeland has been increased over one time and the conversion rate of light energy reached 0.053per cent.This experiment is now still being popularized.
