Passage Three

Human culture is heavily based on the earth's natural resources — oil, coal and metals; soil, water and forest. Industrialized society is using increasing amount of these resources each year.(19) (But fuels , metals and, to a lesser extent, soil are nonrenewable resources. Once used, they are gone for ever. In many cases the lifetime of these resources is coming to an end.)

Besides, factories and machines create wastes. These wastes are poured into the atmosphere, the water and even into soil. The damaging effect of this pollution is, in some cases, permanent.

Modern technology is creating an additional problem and (20) (it is making industry more and more automatic.) This means that fewer and fewer people are needed to operate factories and offices. The consequent loss of jobs is a worldwide problem and Western society is still struggling to find the answer.

Questions 18 to 20 are based on the passage you have just heard.

18. AQ: Which of the following topics is NOT discussed in the passage?

19. AQ: According to the passage, what will happen to some natural resources like fuels and metals?

20. CQ: According to the passage, why are more and more people becoming jobless?

Section C

What will life be like 100 yeas from now? Some (21) (experts) think that there will be (22) (twice) as many people as there are today. We will have run out of most natural (23) (resources) like oil and coal. (24) (Pollution) will become a (25) (serious) problem in many parts of the world. We may even have run out of clean water to drink. The (26) (trouble) is that we do not know how mankind will be able to (27) (conquer) these problems.

But others say that life in the future will be far better than it is today. (28) (We may get more sunlight, fresher air, live in a better environment and lead far better lives than we do today.) For example, many jobs will be “automated”. That is, machines will do many jobs that people do today. Many families will have a robot. (29) (As for education in the future, children will start school at 3, and people will study until they are 30.)

Moreover, some scientists think that, Perhaps, in the 21st century, more food and more materials will be produced. Houses and factories will use solar energy. (30) (Some families will live under the sea near the coasts and will live there as comfortably as on the land.)

In a word, future life will certainly be very different from what life is like today.

Section B

Passage One

43. 【答案】A

45. 【答案】A

Passage Two

In other words, the losses of the few are met from the contributions of the many. This is the basis of insurance.”

47. 【答案】A

“the pool of contributions”意指“投保付的錢”,即“投保費”。
