When the passage is read for the second time, you are required to fill in the blanks numbered from 21 to 27 with the exact words you have just heard. For blanks numbered from 28 to 30 you are required to fill in the missing information. The computer is widely used in all (21) of society. Today the computer is used in the home, small offices, large (22), and universities, and for manufacturing (23) everything a person may think of. It brings about great (24) and high (25), thus (26) a vast number of man-hours to be used in other efforts.
During the past five (27) the computer has been rapidly advanced. (28). Personal computers are very common today in high schools, business and even in some Chinese families. (29)
The computer must be instructed and programmed by people. (30)
. If incorrect instructions are given, then incorrect reports or documents will be received from it. When manufacturing an engine part by computers, for example, the instructions must be exact, because once improperly tooled, the part may not be useful.
Part IIReading Comprehension (共25分)
Section A(每題0.5分,共5分)
Directions: In this section, there is a passage with 10 blanks. You are required to select one word for each blank from a list of choices given in a word bank following the passage. Read the passage through carefully before making your choices. Each choice in the bank is identified by a letter. Mark the corresponding letter with a single line through the center. You may not use any of the words in the bank more than once.
Questions 31 to 40 are based on the following passage.
The future population will be older than today, and this in turn will change the (31) of social demands. However, Mexico will still be far from the “aging societies” that will most likely prevail in the industrialized countries. In less than 25 years, the country will have to add almost as much infrastructure as it has already built up to now, simply to maintain services and production at the current levels. This will be a (32) challenge, although a similar one was faced successfully in the recent past, when available infrastructure was doubled in two decades or so. It is no (33) that much has been said about the need to reduce or preferably halt Mexico's population control which is taken for granted as both good and necessary. It has also gained supporters in the (34) world, and Mexico is no exception. But the arguments about population are complicated, as the following discussion (35).
Even if Mexico's population reaches 125 million by the year 2010, its population (36) is still smaller than the 1985 population density of some 50 countries. By international standards Mexico will still not be overpopulated by the year 2010. If wealth is (37) by people, the more individuals there are, the greater the wealth that (38) could be generated. Why should Mexico control its population at density levels below those of the richer countries if more population represents the possibility of generating more wealth?
