《夢想動物園》：動物園是怎樣建成的

BBC英劇《夢想動物園》（Our Zoo）根據真實故事改編，真實發生地是徹斯特動物園（Chester Zoo）——20世紀30年代莫特席德一家建造了這座如今被公認為英國最好的野生動物園。徹斯特動物園是躋身世界前十的動物園，一萬一千多隻動物以這片111英畝的土地為家。在徹斯特動物園，因為沒有嚴格的“囚禁動物措施”，成員們離家出走是常態。鵜鶘餓了會自己進廚房提醒家人喂食，黑熊們一度天天要出門溜達，再被家人一次次“勸”回家。莫特席德一家用理想和熱情行事，竟然就能一次次打敗攔路怪獸——村民的反對、“有關部門”的阻撓、戰爭、經濟危機，造就了這個奇跡。
《夢想動物園》雖然有藝術的加工，但是並未改變基本脈絡和事實。於是，你在看劇的時候絲毫不擔心莫特席德一家會被各種現實的困境打敗，或者一不留神被黑熊扇死、被毒蛇咬死。因為我們知道，這座動物園最終會成功建成、走向輝煌。結局已定，意味著講故事的難度提高了很多。然而徹斯特動物的故事本身就已經足夠精彩，再加上費心找來的珍稀動物和各種暖心小細節，成就了這個溫暖治愈的成人童話。

口語錦囊
Drift off表示“慢吞吞（或不經意）地走開，慢慢地睡著”。例如：
They drifted off to sleep as the musicplayed.（他們在聽音樂時迷迷糊糊地睡著了。）
此處巴羅拿出的“三氯甲烷”（Chloroform）是一種有毒液體，如果動物或人不慎吸入這種氣體，就會失去意識。巴羅說猴子會慢慢睡去，暗示他將對其進行安樂死。
Barlow： Yes， sir. Have you come to collect？
George： No， no. I’m just， erm， just looking. That’s a kangaroo， isn’t it？
Barlow： Here， if you want to see something...
George： Hey， look at that！
Barlow： Came in on a Navy boat from Australia. No one ever bothered to pick him up. Yours for two bob[（舊）先令].
George： What would I want with your parrot？
Barlow： Fair question. There’s a good lad[家夥]. Easy now...
George： Hey， what’s in there？
Barlow： Monkey. Someone ships it all the way from Colombia and can’t even be bothered to come and pick it up. There were two of them. Other one died. Took us a while to work out what to feed them. Trouble is we can’t keep them forever.
George： What’s that stuff there？
Barlow： Chloroform. Trust me， it’s the best way. He’ll just drift off. （readies to kill the monkey）
George： All right. All right！
Barlow： All right what？
George： How much do you want？
Barlow： For the parrot or the monkey？
George： Both.
巴羅：你好，先生。你是來領東西的嗎？
喬治：不，不，我隻是來看看。這是一隻袋鼠，對嗎？
巴羅：如果你是來看看的……
喬治：嘿，看呐！
巴羅：從澳大利亞一艘海軍船運來的，沒有人願意帶走它，你要的話兩先令帶走。
喬治：我要你的鸚鵡幹嘛？
巴羅：問得好。還有個好家夥，放鬆……
喬治：籠子裏的是什麼？
巴羅：猴子。有人山長水遠從哥倫比亞帶過來的，卻懶得來接走，本來有兩隻的，另外一隻死了。花了段時間才弄清楚要喂什麼給它吃，可惜我們不能一直養著它們。
喬治：那是什麼？
巴羅：三氯甲烷。相信我，這是最好的辦法了。它等下就會睡著了。（準備殺死猴子）
喬治：等等，等等！
巴羅：等什麼？
喬治：一共要多少錢？
巴羅：你要買那隻鸚鵡還是猴子？
喬治：都要。
喬治·莫特席德是一名一戰退伍老兵，戰後和妻子在父母的雜貨店工作，戰爭留給他的創傷從未平複。有一天，他去碼頭進貨，意外發現被遺留在那裏前途未卜的珍稀動物。

Sundry作為名詞時表示“雜貨，雜項”，作為形容詞時表示“各種各樣的”。固定搭配all and sundry 表示“全部，所有的人，每一個人，各色人等”。例如：
1） She could ring for food and drink， laundry and sundry services.（她可以打電話點餐，叫人來取要洗的衣服以及叫其他各種服務。）
2） I made tea for all and sundry at the office.（我給辦公室的每個人都泡了茶。）
除了小女兒瓊，其他家庭成員均不同意家裏養鸚鵡和猴子。無奈之下，喬治來到馬戲團，希望它們能在那裏安家。但馬戲團對待動物的方式很殘忍，他無功而返，甚至還帶回了滿是傷病的駱駝西德尼。他把它們養在後院，讓鄰居排隊收費觀看。
Neighbours： Oh， wow！
George： Go on， then. Nothing to be afraid of.
June： Behold[看] the beast！
Little Boy： Wow！ He looked right at me.
June： He came from a Colombian rainforest all the way here. He can reach up to 22 miles an hour swinging through the trees.
George： Tell them all about Sidney. Go on.
June： Camels are 40 million years old. Not this actual one， of course.
Lizzie： You said you were going to get rid of[擺脫] them！ George： Let’s go inside， love.
Lizzie： Why？ You’ve invited everyone into our back yard， you made this public. Why not discuss it in front of all and sundry？ I’ve tried to be understanding， to be patient. Give you a chance to get…
George： All right.
Lizzie： …What you’re feeling out of your system. But this can’t go on.
George： Butterfield offered to take him but I couldn’t do it. You should see the state of the animals he keeps at that circus， it’s j…No， it’s criminal[犯罪的]. I can’t do it. I’ll find someone else to take them.
Lizzie： Who？
George： Someone. I mean， look at him， he’s beautiful.
Neighbour： Lethal[致命的]！ He scratched[抓] my son.
June： Only cause he stuck[伸出] his hand in his cage. He was standing up for himself.
Lizzie： June， that’s enough！
George： Someone will take him. And the bird.
Lizzie： And the camel？ I can’t believe I’m saying this. It’s a camel， who wants him？
George： Well， he’s not feeling very well， so we’ll nurse[照料] him back to health first.
Lizzie： You’re scaring me. What you’re doing， it’s not normal.
George： Well， maybe it is， for me.
鄰居：噢，哇噢！
喬治：來，沒什麼好怕的。
瓊：看看它！
小男孩：哇噢，它在看著我。
瓊：它來自哥倫比亞的熱帶雨林，在樹林裏飛行的時速達到22英裏。
喬治：介紹一下西德尼吧。
瓊：駱駝已經有四千萬年曆史了，當然這隻不是。
莉齊：你說你會弄走它們的。
喬治：我們進去說，親愛的。
莉齊：為什麼？你把所有人都請來我們的後院，你把這裏變成了公眾場所。那為什麼不可以在大家麵前說？我試著去體諒你，去忍耐，讓你做……
喬治：沒錯。
莉齊：……你想做的事。但是，這件事真的不行。
喬治：巴特菲爾德答應收留它，但是我不可以交給他。你沒看到在他馬戲團裏麵的動物是什麼樣子，那是……那是犯罪，我做不到。我會另外找人收留它們的。
莉齊：誰？
喬治：會有人的，你看看它，它多漂亮。
鄰居：會死人的！這隻猴子抓傷了我的兒子。瓊：那是因為你兒子要抓它，它隻是正當防衛而已。
莉齊：瓊，夠了！
喬治：有人會來收留它的，還有那隻鸚鵡。莉齊：還有這隻駱駝？我都不敢相信自己說出這樣的話。這是隻駱駝！誰會要隻駱駝？喬治：它現在身體狀況不好，我們要先把它的病治好。
莉齊：你嚇到我了，你現在做的事情很不正常。
喬治：也許對我來說，這才是正常的。

看著這些可憐的動物，喬治心裏萌生了建立一座沒有籠子的動物園的念頭。他偷偷打聽適合開辦動物園的莊園，獨自計劃著這一切。而後，他將家人帶到他看好的奧克菲爾德莊園，描繪了他的夢想。
Lucy： What are we doing here？
Lizzie： Don’t touch anything， June！
George： （draw a picture） This is us. This house， I mean. Now I’m thinking this shed[棚] here， we pull that down and we rebuild， maybe an aviary[大型鳥舍]. Right？ Stables[馬廄] here and the greenhouse out the back. Now that is huge. And there’s ten acres of land all ready to be used as a paddock[小牧場]. It’s perfect for animals.
