1. Hillbilly山人比利,土包子
A slightly derogatory[貶義的] word, used to describe people from the countryside who don’t know anything about cities.
e.g. Oh God, my cousin is coming to visit and he’s such a hillbilly. I don’t think he’s ever even used an elevator.
2. FOB (fresh off the boat)初來乍到者(借用了國際貿易中常用的貿易術語“離岸價”Free On Board)
Used to describe a recent immigrant to a new country, especially when they haven’t adapted to the culture yet.
e.g. Joe is a total FOB—he hasn’t even learned how to use chopsticks yet!
3. MIA (missing in action)失蹤,音訊全無
Originally a military term to describe soldiers that were never proved killed, captured, or safely returned; now used to talk about someone you haven’t seen or heard from in a long time.
e.g. We’d better go over to Pete’s house. He’s been MIA for about a month and we should probably check on him.
4. To be blind-sided晴天霹靂
An unexpected and negative event takes you by surprise.
e.g. I was completely blind-sided when Robyn dumped me—we seemed so happy.
5. To rock something盡露,盡顯
To wear or display something, usually in an extremely good or extremely bad way.
e.g. ① She’s been rocking those awesome boots at every party.
② Did you see that black eye he’s rocking?Must’ve pissed someone off[激怒某人] last night.
