The superior man stands up alone and has no fear, and keeps retired from the world without regret.——from The Great Symbolism, Da Guo

Modern interpretation: The superior man goes with truth, and he goes calmly even if he is not understood by others. He can keep retired from the world but can never lose heart.

Moral: It requires a dauntless courage to get rid of unhealthy trends, evil practice, and bad customs and habits.

Glossary: Da Guo, literally means “excess” and was viewed by the ancients as a symbol of death. It suggests a critical stage, and also a special time when none other than the superior man can act and prosper.
