有個小偷住進了一家旅店，一連住了好幾天，本來指望能順手牽羊偷些東西來付清賬單，苦於一直找不到合適的機會。一天，小偷看見旅店掌櫃穿著一件嶄新、精美的衣服獨自坐在旅店門口，他心裏暗喜：機會來了。於是，他就走過去，坐到掌櫃身邊，和他閑談。他們談了很久，都覺得有些疲倦了。隨後，小偷打了一個哈欠，並像狼一樣嗥叫起來。掌櫃聽到很是驚奇，問道： “你的聲音為什麼這樣嚇人呢 ?”小偷答道： “好吧，我就告訴你吧。不過你要先抓好我的衣服，否則我會把它們撕成碎片的。我不知道我的聲音為什麼會如此恐怖，是上天對我罪行的懲罰還是什麼別的原因。但是，我非常清楚的一點是：隻要我連打三個哈欠，我真的會變成一隻狼，向人撲去。 ”
說完，他就打了第二個哈欠，並且還像剛才那樣嗥叫。旅店掌櫃聽了他的話之後，就信以為真，轉身想離開。可小偷緊緊抓住他的襯衣，開始懇求他： “好心的先生，你別把我一個人丟下啊！不然我變成狼時，會把它們撕破的。 ”剛說完，他就開始打第三個哈欠。掌櫃害怕小偷真的變成狼會馬上把他吃掉，就驚慌失措地丟下自己的新衣，逃進旅館躲藏起來，牢牢地鎖上大門。而小偷則拿起地上的新衣得意地回家去了。
