牧羊人將羊群趕到草地放牧，發現有幾隻野山羊和自己的羊群混在一起吃草。到了傍晚，他把所有的羊全趕到了自己的山洞裏。第二天下起了暴風雪，因此他不能像平常那樣把羊群趕到外麵去吃草，隻好在山洞裏喂養他們。為了讓這些野山羊能夠聽從自己的管束，他給自己的羊群有限的草料，隻夠維持基本的生存；而供給那些野山羊充足的草料。
外麵的冰雪融化了，牧羊人又把羊群趕出來放牧。誰知，剛出山洞，野山羊就紛紛奔向山裏，離他而去。憤怒的牧羊人責罵他們忘恩負義：得到了精心的照料之後就離開他。野山羊轉過身對他說： “正因為這樣我們才要離開。我們剛到你那裏，你對我們的照料就比對原來的山羊更為周到，可見，如果以後再有其他山羊，你一定會冷淡我們，而善待他們。 ”
不能喜新厭舊。
