以-s結尾的表示山脈、群島等複數意義的專有名詞作主語,謂語動詞用複數形式。如:the Alps阿爾卑斯山,the Philippine Islands菲律賓群島,the Appalas阿巴拉契亞山脈,the Himalayas喜馬拉雅山脈。The Alps are the greatest mountain range in Europe.They cover an area of about 200,000 sq.km.

3.集體名詞作主語

集體名詞作主語,如果表示整體概念,謂語動詞用單數形式,如果就具體成員而言,謂語動詞用複數形式。

有些集體名詞如cattle,folk,militia,police等,隻作為複數看,謂語動詞用複數形式。如:The key is to it crimes so fusing that polibsp;feel too stupid to even write a crime report about them.(Randy K.Milholland)具有單數意義的集體名詞作主語,謂語動詞為單數形式。如:There is a lot of furniture in the living-room.

4.代詞作主語

不定代詞each,every,no等修飾的名詞即使以and或逗號連接成多個並列主語,謂語動詞仍用單數形式。如:Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.(Leo Tolstoy)如果主語由more than one...或many a...構成,盡管從意義上看是複數,但謂語動詞仍用單數形式。如:Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.(Mark Twain)both,(a)few,many,veral等限定詞修飾主語,謂語動詞要用複數形式。如:Mine honour is my life,both grow in oake honour from me and my life is done.(William Shakespeare)
