這兩個詞組的含義和用法並不相同。它們有如下的區別：
（一)as it was是as it is的過去式，意：“實際上”、“事實上”、“照原來的模樣”、“就實際情況而論”；as it were隻有一個形式，其意為：“仿佛”、“好像”、“可謂”。
As it was,we could hardly get to Hung Hom by two o''clock.
事實上，我們是難以在兩點前趕到紅磡的。
You may leave it as it wasbris.
你可以聽其自然。
Mr.Yu is,as it were,a walking diary.
於先生好像是一本活字典。
In many ways,the rich live,as it were,in a totally different world from the poor.
在許多方麵，可以說，富有的人是生活在與窮人完全不同的世界裏。
（二)as it wasbris是陳述語氣，在句中作方式狀語；as it were是虛擬語氣，在句中作插入語。有時候，它也可以放在句末。例如：
He is my best friend,my d lf,as it were.
他是我最要好的朋友，可謂我的心腹之交。
（三)as it wasbris在使用時，句中前後的時態要一致，如：As it was,we could not help him.(As it is,we ot help him.）；as it were則可以和任何時態結合使用，例如在Mr.Yu is,as it were,a walking diary.一句中，我們可以把is改為was或has always been。
（四)實際上，as it were是as if it were so的縮寫。
通過上麵各個例句，我們可以看出，as it wasbris中的it和as it were中的it是有所不同的。前者的it是有所指的，後者的it是虛設的。例如在The play is good enough as it was．這個句子中，it指的是play，它相當於as the play was (in the past）。
