這兩個詞的詞素相同，但含義和使用場合有所不同。
blackboard是“黑板”（a smooth surface，usually of dark slate,on which writing is doh chalk）。black board是“黑色的板”（any piece of thin wood that is dark in colour）。“黑色的板”不一定就是“黑板”。
