這一對詞都是bear的過去分詞，又都能表示“出生”、“生孩子”的意思，但用法有所不同。
（一)born用作表語和定語時，意：“出生”、“出身”；borne作動詞時，意：“生育”、“結出”。例：
I was born in 1933.
我生於1933年。
We were born inbrinto a well-to-do family.
我們出生於一個小康之家。
My mother has borne four children.
我母親生了4個孩子。
Has this tree borne fruit this year?
這棵樹今年是否結過果實？
（二)在主動語態的句子裏，用borne，不用born。（見上例）
（三)在被動語態句裏，如有介詞by，用borne，不用born；如果沒有by，便用born。例如：
Of all the children borne by her only one survives.
Of all the children born to her only one survives.
她生了許多小孩，可是隻有一個活著。
（四)born和borne都可用作定語（見（三）的兩個例句）。borne一般作後置定語，born則既可後置，也可前置。見下例：
Mary is a born orator.
瑪麗是個天生的演說家。
（五)bear用作“支持”、“忍受”、“負擔”、“結果實”等義時，其過去分詞一律用borne，不用born。例：
I have borh you till now.（忍受）
All the costs of the repairs will be borne by the pany.（負擔）
They were borne up by patriotism aermination.（支持）
（六)born的後麵可以接形容詞，也可以接副詞。例：
She was born wi.
The baby was born easily.
（七)born of可以表達“出生於”，例：
She was born of rich parents.
有時亦可作“來源於”解，例：
Some people believe that crime is born of poverty.
