在英語裏，有些名詞具有兩個不同的形式，例如brothers和brethren都是brother的複數形式，但它們的含義和使用場合有所不同。
brothers的含義是“同胞兄弟”（sons of the same mother）；brethren則表示“會友”、“教友”或“同僚”之意（members of one unity）。
The Shaw brothers are one of the richest families in Hong Kong.
邵氏兄弟是香港最富有的家族之一。
The brothers are as like as two peas.
這兩兄弟的麵貌長得很相像。
They are brethren of this religious society.
他們是這個宗教團體的教友。
brothers除作“同胞兄弟”解之外，亦可用於比喻意思，以表達“如兄弟的”、“友好的”、“同夥的”等意。如：
We must all stand together,brothers！
弟兄們，我們必須齊心協力，同舟共濟！
We are brothers in arms.
我們是戰友。
“四海之內皆兄弟”這句名言既可譯作All men are brothers.也可譯作All men are brethren.
在美國俚語裏，brother一詞還可以用來表示“請求”、“懇求”之意。例：
Brother, you spare a dime?
先生，可否請你行行好?
