這一對短語僅差一字之微，意義截然不同。
ot do it表示“不能做或不可做此事”，與must not do it同義。ot but do it的意思是“不得不做此事”, 與ot help doing it同義。試對比下麵兩個例句：
We ot stop it.
我們不能製止它。
We ot but stop it.
我們不得不製止它。
由例句可見，ot but是用於“事與願違”的被迫場合。因此，“在人民的強烈願望的壓力下，他們不得不裝出一些姿態”這一句應譯為：
Under pressure of the strong desire of the people,they ot but make (or ot help making)some gestures.
ot help but do it和ot help doing it雖然同義，但前者的說法比較別扭，應避免使用。例如：Millions of hearts could not help but thrill in respon.這一句應改為Millions of hearts could not help thrilling in respon.或Millions of hearts thrilled in respon.
另一點要指出的是， but和ot but的含義也不相同。前者意：“隻能”、“隻好”，與 only同義；ot but則表示“不得不”或“不禁”的意思。請看例句：
I but try.
我隻能試試看。（but是副詞）
I but do my best.
我隻好盡力而為。
You ot but admire his ce.
你不得不佩服他的勇氣。
When I dresd up as Santa Claus,she could not but laugh.
