這三個詞在用法和意義上有所不同。
clothbrklbr是做衣服的料子，包括毛的、棉的、麻的和絲的，它是物質名詞，多用單數形式，複數形式是cloths。clothe是動詞, 意：“穿衣”（to put on clothes）。clothesbrklzbr是用料子做成的衣服，它沒有單數形式。
I have bought five yards of cloth.
我買了五碼衣料。
This plain cloth is home produced.
這種素色布是國產布。
He was clothed in fine linen.
他穿細麻布的衣服。
My clothes are made of woollen cloth.
我的衣服是用毛料做的。
請注意，clothes不能與數詞連用，不能說a clothes，或six clothes, 而隻能用具體的衣服名詞, 如：dress，coat,overcoat,garment等，因為這些詞有單複數的形式。要表示“許多衣服”的意思時, 可以說many clothes,much clothing或a good deal of clothes．
另一點要注意的是，clothes和clothing都是名詞，又都表示“衣裝”的意思，但它們的含義和用法也有所不同。clothes是“衣服”，意指全身衣服的各個部分，故永遠用複數形式；clothing是“衣著”，指衣服的整體而言，它是衣服的總稱，是不可數名詞，永遠用單數形式。clothing如同clothes一樣，不能和數詞或不定冠詞a連用。例：
Clothes do not make the man.We should not judge a man by the clothes he wears.
衣裝不是人，我們不能隻憑衣著來看人。
In their try many people have not yet solved the clothing problem.
在他們的國家裏，許多人還不能解決衣著問題。
A wolf is no sheep,though dresd in sheep''s clothing.
狼披羊皮，終非真羊。
“一套衣服”可以說a suit of clothes或an article of clothing，但是suit和article在這裏不能互換使用。
