這一對詞都表示“電力的”、“電氣的”意思，但用法有所不同。
從前是electrical比electric用得普遍，但近年來，後者比前者通用。例如：electric current（電流）; electric battery（電池）; electric light（電燈）; electric wave（電波）; electric tram（電車）; electric bell（電鈴）; electric iron（電熨鬥）; electric stove（電爐）; electric chair（電椅）。香港有兩條馬路，一條叫“電器道”，一條叫“電氣街”，前者的英文名是“Electric Road”，後者叫“Electric Street”。除此之外，electric還可以用作比喻意義，作“緊張的”、“刺激的”解。例：
“Could you show me the way to Electric Road or Electric Street?”—“Yes,both of them are in North Point.”
“您可否告訴我電器道或電氣街如何走法？”——“可以，這兩條路都是在北角。”

electrical現在隻表示“電學的”或“有關電力的”含義,如：electrical books（電學書籍）；electrical engineering（電力工程）；electrical engineer（電力工程師）；electrical transmission（照相傳真）；electrical equipment（電力設備；供電設備）；electrical energy（電能）。例：
Electrical engineers are mu demand now.
現在非常缺少電力工程師。

如上所述，electric和electrical是同義詞，都是用以表示“電力的”、“電氣的”含義，因此，在不少場合，它們可以互換使用。如electric（or electrical)apparatus; electric（or electrical)engineering，但在現代英語裏，前者的使用範圍比後者廣得多。
另一點需要注意的是，electric和electrical的副詞都是electrically。
