這一組詞意義相同，但內涵和使用場合有所不同。
fruit是不可數名詞。單數形式時，作“水果”解，詞尾不加s。指大量的某一種水果時，其後也不加s。例：
I would like some fruit.
我想吃點水果。
The tree is laden with fruit.
這棵樹上結滿了果子。
He gave me a basket of fruit.
他給我一籃水果。
請注意，“我想吃一隻水果”不能譯為“I''d like to have a fruit”。“我通常吃大量水果”也不能譯作“Usually I eat many fruits”。應將前句改為“I''d like to have an apple (e or a banana）”；後句改作“Usually I eat much fruit”。
fruits用作複數形式，意為“不同種類的水果”。如：many fruits是“許多種水果”；two different winter fruits是“兩種不同的冬令水果”。例：
There are many fruits oable．
桌上有各式各樣的水果。
It is said that almost all the fruits in Hong Kong are imported from abroad.
據說，在香港，幾乎所有的水果都是進口的。
值得注意的是，表示“產物”、“成果”、“收益”、“報酬”等意思時，較常用fruits；但與bear連用時，一般用fruit。例如：
I''m deeply vihat your hard work will bear fruit.
我深信，你的辛勤勞動將會開花結果的。
We hope that you enjoy the fruits of your labour.
我們希望你能享受到你的勞動果實。
“the fruits of the earth”是指各種可吃的或有用的農作物，如：,nuts,cotton,potatoes,grain等等。
