gold用作形容詞時，很易和另一形容詞golden混淆不清。它們的區別如下：
（一)gold的含義是“用金子做的”（made of gold），如：a g（金戒指）; a gold watch（金表）; a gold （金幣）。在這些場合下，其義為“金質的”。golden的意思是“金黃色的”、“黃金似的”（bright yellow in colour and look）, 如：golden hair（金黃色的頭發）；the golden waves of wheat（金黃色的麥浪）。例：
She bought a gold watch yesterday．
昨天她買了一塊金表。
That old man has a gold tooth．
那個老翁有一顆金牙。
My dog has a good coat ht golden hair.
我的狗長了一身漂亮的金黃色的毛。
The room is flooded with warm，golden sunlight．
房間裏到處是溫暖、燦爛的陽光。
請注意兩點：
（1）a gold watch和a golden watch不同，前者是“金表”；後者是“金黃色的表”；（2）如要說：“這個表是金質的”，我們不能用gold作表語。例如我們不可以說：The watch is gold．而應該說：The watch is of gold或The watch is made of gold．
（二)gold和golden都能用於比喻義，此時，前者表示“善良的”、“高貴的”、“貴重的”等義，如：a heart of gold（善良的心），a voice of gold（金嗓子）；後者則表示“極好的”、“幸福的”、“適度的”、“前程似錦的”等義，如：a golden opportunity（極好的機會），golden age（幸福的年代），golden mean（中庸之道）。例：
You''ve misd a golden opportunity.
你已錯過了一次絕好的機會。
I''m sure your future there will be golden.
我相信你在那兒將會前程似錦。
She has a heart of gold.
她有一顆善良的心。
Zhou Xuan has a voice of gold.
周璿是金嗓子（指音色優美無比）。
在上列例子裏，gold是名詞，不是形容詞。和golden搭配使用的詞很多，如：age,rule,wedding,hours,sunt等。
