這一對詞都表示“寧可”、“情願”之意，意思相同，但使用場合不一樣。
（一)在用於指現在的情況時，had rather和would rather可以互換使用。在用來指將來或推測的情況時，隻能用would rather, 不可用had rather。例如：
I had rather (or would rather)not go there now.
現在我寧可不到那兒去。
“Will you join us in a walk after supper？”—“Thank you, but I''d rather not．”
“晚飯後你和我們一起去散步好嗎？”——“謝謝你了，但我不想去。”
（上句中的I''d rather是would rather的縮寫，因為在這裏，隻能用would rather，不可以用had rather）
（二)had rather和would rather都是習慣用語，句中要使用虛擬語氣，因此，我們不能把它們改作have（or has）rather或will（or shall）rather。例：
He had rather（or would rather)die than surrender.
他寧死不屈。
We would rather you came tomorrow than today．
我們寧願你明天來，不要今天來。
請注意，上麵第二句中用came，是虛擬語氣，故不用will e; 用would rather, 不用had rather, 是因為要表示將來。
另一點要注意的是，had rather和would rather之後不能接帶to的不定式，隻能跟不帶to的不定式或虛擬語氣的從句。例：
I would rather go.
I would rather they went.
在書麵語言裏，rather這個字最好不要和would或had分開。例如最好用They would rather have goo Singapore.而不要寫作They would have rather goo Singapore.因為後者是口語體。在此句中，“would have rather gone”當然更不能改作：“had have rather gone”。
