late除作形容詞外，亦可用作副詞，因而容易和另一副詞lately混淆不清。
用作形容詞時，late的意思是“遲到的”、 "晚到的”（arriving or happening after the usual，arranged or expected time）；用作副詞時，其意為“遲到地”、“過晚地”（after the usual，arranged or expected time）。late的反義詞是early。例：
The plane was ten minutes late.
飛機晚點十分鍾。
Sorry，I''m so dreadfully late！
抱歉，我來得太晚了！
It is oo late to mend.
亡羊補牢，永不為晚。
