在英語裏，有許多詞語的詞素完全相同，但因排列的順序相反，意義就不相同或大不一樣（參閱上一節）。值得注意的是，有個別詞語在詞序顛倒後，其意義並沒有很大的變化，looker-on和onlooker就是其中一例。這兩個詞都作“旁觀者”解, 即someone who watches an activity or event from a distahout taking part in it.它們的唯一區別是，前者大都指隨意在一旁觀看的人，如在馬路上或公園裏閑看的人；後者指故意在一旁觀看者，如看人下棋或打架的人。
looker-on的複數形式是lookers-on; onlooker的複數形式是onlookers。例：
There are many lookers-on at the pier every day．
每日在碼頭有不少閑望之人。
Lookers-on e most of the game．
旁觀者清。
Watg them fight together, she kept silent and played the role of an onlooker.
看著他們打成一團，她保持沉默，扮演旁觀者的角色。
