這兩個詞都是melt的過去分詞，但使用場合有所不同，盡管它們都是表示“溶化”、“溶解”之意。
（一)一般來說，melted的使用範圍比molten廣。molten隻能作定語，放在較為堅硬的物質和物體之前，如：molten steel，molten gold, molteal, molten rock; melted作定語時，一般放在較為柔軟的物質和物體之前。例：melted snow, melted butter, melted cakes。
（二)melted除作定語外，也可用作謂語動詞，如：A lot of the scrap metal be melted down and ud again． 而molten現在隻用以指在高溫下熔化了的東西，故隻能作定語用。例：
The figurine was melted by the heat．
小塑像因受熱而熔化。
Plea clear away the melted butter．
請把那些化掉的黃油擦幹淨。
Be careful of the molten steel．
要小心那些鋼水。
Lava is molten rock．
火山岩是熔化了的岩石。
與之類似區別的詞有mowed和mown（割草），前者既可作定語，也可作謂語；後者隻能作定語。
順便在此指出，melt和smelt是近義詞，很易混淆。melt是“溶化”或“熔化”；smelt是“冶煉”或“熔煉”。例：
Ice melts in the sun.
冰在陽光下會融化。
Glass melts at a very high temperature.
玻璃在很高的溫度下會熔化。
We smelt iron ore by heat.
我們用加熱的方式來冶煉鐵礦石。
During smelting,the temperature in the furnace is raid and the iros.
冶煉時，高爐內的溫度升高，鐵就開始熔化。
