mean time的意思是“平均太陽時”，它又可稱之為mean solar time。這裏的mean是形容詞，意為“平均的”，又如mean temperature（平均溫度）；mea（平均高度）; mean yearly rainfall（年均降雨量）。例：

meantime的意思是“同時”、“其時”，既可作名詞，又可作副詞，作副詞時，和meanwhile及in the meantime意思相同，但不及meanwhile和in the meantime用得普遍。例：
We will go to the Far East this year; in the meantime we will be travelling in India.
今年我們要去遠東，屆時我們將去印度旅遊。
