用作形容詞時，west很易和另一形容詞western混淆不清。它們之間的區別大致有以下幾點：
（一)在專有名詞裏，大都用west，不用western。例如West Berlin（西柏林）；the West Indies（西印度群島）；the West End（倫敦西區）; West Germany（西德）。
（二)表示“方位”、“方向”的意思時，用west，不用western。例如the west wind（西風）；west longitude（西經）。
（三)表示“屬於西方國家的”意思時，用western，不用west。例如Western civilization（西方的文化）; Western sce（西方的科學）；Western （西方的風俗）；Wester（西方或歐洲人的飲食）。
（四)表示“某物或某地點向某一方向”的意思時，用western, 不用west。例如the western front of the hou（房屋的西麵）; the Western Hills（西山），指該山在北京城的西麵; the western part of a（中國的西部）; on the western coast（在西海岸）; the western front（［第一次世界大戰中的］西部戰線）。
（五)在某些特殊和固定的說法中，用western，不用west。例如the Western Hemisphere（西半球）; Western Roman Empire（西羅馬帝國）。
通過west和western的比較，我們可以由此悟彼地聯想到east和eastern；south和southern; north和northern的區別了。
當west，east，south，north等詞指某個國家的一個區域時，第一個字母要大寫，並在它的前麵加上一個定冠詞。如“中國的西部”the West of a（比較：the western part of a）；“美國的南部”the South of the U.S.A.，但是，當它們指方位時，就不要大寫。例如，“太陽從東方升起”是The sun ris in the east．
在英國, "北風”可用a north wind或a northern wind，但前者隱含“寒冷”的意思；後者的含義是“從北方刮來的風”。
