最先倒黴的是王叔文和王伾，王叔文被貶為渝州戶曹（戶籍官），一年後被賜死，王伾被貶為開州司馬，不久在開州憋屈地死去，他倆所主導的永貞革新徹底以失敗告終。
王叔文曾經的同黨、後來的仇敵韋執誼則被貶為崖州司馬，崖州在如今的海南省瓊山市，在那裏韋執誼度過了人生最後的七年，四十六歲時病逝於任上。
劉禹錫和柳宗元呢？
他們一生的悲劇剛剛拉開序幕。
在曆史的宏大敘事中，且容我用一點篇幅寫一寫大曆史中的小人物劉禹錫和柳宗元。
在王叔文和王伾被貶的同時，劉禹錫和柳宗元也遭到了貶黜，劉禹錫被貶為連州刺史（今廣東連州），柳宗元被貶為邵州刺史（今湖南邵陽），僅僅在幾天前他們還是炙手可熱的京官，現在他們就要到蠻荒之地報到了。
在那個“交通基本靠走，溝通基本靠吼”的年代，劉禹錫和柳宗元風塵仆仆地從首都長安趕往自己的貶所，一邊趕路，一邊感受著人生的巨大落差。
還有比這更差的結局嗎？
這個可以有。
就在劉禹錫和柳宗元等人忙於趕路時，新的聖旨又到了，新任皇帝李純認為把他們貶做刺史太便宜了，還是貶為司馬吧！
這樣，劉禹錫便由連州刺史貶為朗州（今湖南常德）司馬，柳宗元由邵州刺史貶為永州（今湖南永州）司馬，與他們一起被貶的官員同樣被降到了司馬一級。
