AtExeterUniversityRowlingtookherdegreeinFrenchandspentoneyearstudyinginParis.AftercollegeshemovedtoLondontoworkforAmnestyInternationalasaresearcherandbilingualsecretary.Thebestthingaboutworkinginanoffice,shehassaid,wastypingupstoriesonthecomputerwhennoonewaswatching.Duringthistime,onaparticularlylongtrainridefromManchestertoLondoninthesummerof1990,theideacametoherofaboywhoisawizardanddoesn’tknowit.Heattendsaschoolforwizardry—shecouldseehimveryplainlyinhermind.BythetimethetrainpulledintoKing’sCrossStationfourhourslater,manyofthecharactersandtheearlystagesoftheplotwerefullyformedinherhead.Thestorytookfurthershapeasshecontinuedworkingonitinpubsandcafesoverherlunchhours.

In1992RowlingleftoffworkinginofficesandmovedtoPortugaltoteachEnglishasaSecondLanguage.Inspiteofherstudentsmakingjokesabouthernamethistimetheycalledher“RollingStone”,sheenjoyedteaching.Sheworkedafternoonsandevenings,leavingmorningsfreeforwriting.AfterhermarriagetoaPortugueseTVjournalistendedindivorce,RowlingreturnedtoBritainwithherinfantdaughterandasuitcasefullofHarryPotternotesandchapters.ShesettledinEdinburghtobenearhersisterandsetouttofinishthebookbeforelookingforateachingjob.Wheelingherdaughter’scarriagearoundthecitytoescapetheirtiny,coldapartment,shewouldduckintocoffeeshopstowritewhenthebabyfellasleep.Inthiswayshefinishedthebookandstartedsendingittopublishers.ItwasrejectedseveraltimesbeforeshefoundLondonagent,chosenbecauseshelikedhisname—ChristopherLittle,whosoldthemanuscripttoBloomsburyChildren’sBooks.
