當時，中國飽受帝國主義列強侵略，民族危機嚴重，民主革命浪潮洶湧澎湃。有一次在上細菌課時，從電影上看到一個替俄軍當偵探的中國人，被日本兵抓住槍斃，而圍觀的中國人無動於衷，他深受刺激，覺得學醫並不要緊，因為如果思想不覺悟，體格再健壯也無濟於事。並認為，能改變人的精神狀態的，隻有文學。他於是放棄醫學，而改行從事文學創作。
