2006年夏，海南省民族學會自北京拍攝薩維納《海南島誌》（MonographiedeHainan）原書數碼照片，年底始得拷貝一份。初讀一遍，感覺珍貴異常。以往所讀海南史誌，多輾轉相抄，缺乏實地調查，令人生厭。此書對海南地理人文及黎區風土人情的記述，材料皆實地調查得來，屬第一手資料。薩維納以52歲之齡，在當時落後條件下艱苦跋涉，跑遍海南島，唯此求真求實態度，令人欽佩。
周偉民、唐玲玲二教授，積極鼓勵我翻譯此書，以饗讀者。於是把手頭的活放下，把《海南島誌》譯出來，對地名、人物、曆史事件等加以注釋，並加上小標題，以利讀者閱讀。
本書譯完後，意外得到當年與薩維納同行的黃強將軍所寫《五指山問黎記》。黃著與薩書第二部分內容相當，可互相參照，因而使注釋更加完整。
我們應該感謝薩維納、黃強兩位先賢，由於他們的堅韌和勤奮，為我們留下了有關當時海南島地理人文的珍貴記錄。
我也感謝陳剛先生，他仔細比對原文，糾正了許多錯誤。當然，譯稿中的其他錯誤都由譯者負責。
