Alan found a house, and knocked at the door.
It was not a very safe thing but he did it for mysake. In that part of the conutry, there was no greatclan. There were many different small Highlandfamilies. Some were friends, some were enemies.
There were Maclarens, and these followed Alan ’schief in war. There were also Macgregors,They hada bad name, and nobody liked them.
We were lucky. The house belonged to DuncanDhu,a Maclaren. He knew Alan, and welcomed us.
His wife put me to bed and sent for,a doctor. I wasvery ill,and for a week I could not move. But I wasyoung and strong, and in a month,I recovered myhealth.
All this time,Alan did not leave me. By dayhe hid in a little wood. Every night he came out tovisit me. He was in danger, but he stayed. I wasvery glad when he came.
in his house, and loved music. When I was better,we had many gay nights with the bagpipes.
The soldiers did not find us,and no sheriffcame to ask questions. Yet all the people in thatdistrict knew I was there. A bill which describedme clearly was hanging near my bed. I had comewith Alan. They must guess I was the boy from theLowlands. I had changed my clothes, but I couldnot change my age or person.
