東漢成皋有任縣令叫杜詩，
這人大大有來曆：
他少年即胸懷大誌氣不凡，
很快就官升侍禦史。
有一位將軍蕭廣很蠻橫，
經常放縱士兵把百姓欺。
敲詐勒索錢與物，
有時還躥進村中搶婦女。
老百姓受到騷擾生怨憤，
杜詩就找到蕭廣把這事提，
勸誡他以後不能再這樣，
蕭廣卻根本不當一回事。
杜詩一怒之下動了手，
殺死了蕭廣方解氣。
把蕭廣的罪行公布後，
老百姓歡天又喜地。
光武帝劉秀得知後，
頒下聖旨召杜詩，
對他的果敢倍讚賞，
給杜詩升官贈棨（qǐ）戟。
緊接著又派杜詩出京去，
馳騁沙場誅叛逆。
各地叛軍誅平後，
又把成皋來治理。
不久後，調任南陽做太守，
更是煌煌有政績。
他曾經廣拓農田修農具，
為百姓除暴安良謀福利。
光武帝了解情況後，
又要給杜詩升官職。
杜詩卻認為做官本分該如此，
還要求降到小郡去任職，
說自己“才能隻夠做小官，
趕上了國家缺人才把高職任。
長時期誠惶又誠恐，
更擔心辜負聖主栽培意”。
越這樣光武帝越信任他，
讓他仍任太守職。
到後來，“誠惶誠恐”作成語，
常用作表章奏疏套用語，
表臣下敬畏皇帝的威與嚴，
也形容小心謹慎去處世。
Be Worried and Fearful
In the Eastern Han Dynasty（25—220A。D。）there was in Chenggao County，a magistrate named Du Shi。About this man there were many stories。When he was young he cherished high aspirations，and fortunately he was soon promoted to the assistant royal secretary。
Then there was a general named Xiao Guang who was merciless。He mismanaged his troop and they often bullied the folk。They robbed them of their property，and even went into the countryside to prey on women。The people were irritated by their vicious acts。
Du Shi went to Xiao Guang to mention this，and tried to persuade him not to do it again。Xiao Guang，however，turned a deaf ear to him。Du Shi burst into a furious rage，and killed Xiao Guang passionately。
