Get on Your Feet
Walking is the UK’s most popular sport and it has an interesting history. In April of 1932, 400 people left Manchester and Sheffield in northern England to walk across Kinder Scout[金德斯考特峰] in the Pennines[奔寧山脈]. They were unhappy that only rich people, who went there to kill birds, could visit this beautiful area. Because of the walk, National Parks in England and Wales finally began in 1949, as well as the Pennine Way, one of twenty long, beautiful paths.
There are lots of shorter paths, and you don’t have to walk the whole way if you are on one of the long paths. But there are some things you need to know. Don’t drop paper and plastic; close gates after you; keep dogs on leads if there are farm animals in the area; and stay on the path.
Also, remember that British weather can change very quickly, especially in the hills. If you are in Wales, Scotland or the north of England, take lots of food and water, as well as warm clothes. Our National Parks and footpaths[小路,小徑] are the best way to enjoy Britain’s wonderful countryside.
