One of the things that makes Japan such a rich source of high-quality manga and anime is the popularity of drawing as a hobby among young people. Students spend their free time drawing their own manga and swapping【交換】 them with friends. The latest manifestation【表現】 of this culture is the social networking service that allows people to post their own paintings on the Internet.
A prime【主要的】 example of these sites is Pixiv, which now attracts 1.4 billion page views a month. Some 13 million works have been posted to the site so far, making Pixiv Japan's second-largest social networking service. The concept is simple. Professional and amateur【業餘的】 artists upload their pictures. Other users then rate these pictures out of ten, post comments, and bookmark【加書簽】 their favorites. The site thus encourages communication and interaction【互動】 among users through drawing.
Manga-style drawings, especially fan art based on anime and video games, is popular, but ink and wash paintings and children's pictures can also be found. When the site launched, its founders were hoping to attract 1,000 users. Within five months of going live in September 2007, Pixiv already had more than 100,000 members. Two years later, this number passed a million.
One reason for the site's popularity is the ease with which artists can get feedback from other users. The quality of the top-ranked drawings is exceptional【異常的】, and the best artists are treated like celebrities. One of the most popular artists on Pixiv at the moment is called Huke. His big breakthrough【突破】 came when he posted illustrations【插圖】 of his original creation—a girl known as Black Rock Shooter, who has now developed into a franchise【特許經營權】 including anime, songs and figures.
