The superior man, by his self-reverence maintains the inward correctness, and in righteousness adjusts his external acts.——- from The Record of Wen Yan, Kun
Modern interpretation: A virtuous man is supposed to be upright and dignified about himself. Outwardly he should do everything straightforward according to principle.
Moral: An unselfish man is self-reverened inside. His righteous deeds make himself square outside. With the inward straightness and outward squareness, his moral character is naturally lofty.
Glossary: Inward straightness means that a man is honest and straightforward from the bottom of his heart. And outward squareness requires the man to be independent and ready to differ, who is always righteous and upright in dealing with people.
