4.雙重屬格

雙重屬格與’s屬格及of屬格都有區別,如:a friend of my brother’s表示我哥哥還有其他朋友,而用’s屬格my brother’s friend強調哥哥有這個朋友,並不涉及是否有其他朋友。

再如a portrait of Mr.Brownz’s指的是一張布朗擁有的畫像,而a portrait of Mr.Brown指畫像上的人是布朗。一般說來,如果屬格所修飾的名詞還存在其他限定詞,如some,many,oher等,必須采用雙重屬格的形式表達,如:As the same time I had found some powder of my master’s in the great ,with whibsp;I filled one of the large bottles in the ca,whibsp;is almost empty.(Wuthering Heights)Joe went and sat down on one arm of her mother’s,looking as if she were about to join in some solemn affair.(Little Women)
