這一對詞的詞序相反，含義大不一樣。
before long的意思是“不久”、“不久之後”；before是介詞，long是名詞。long before的意思是“很久以前”；long是副詞，before是介詞或連詞。
Class will be over before long.
很快就要下課了。
I wish to e you again in the Uates before long.
我希望不久之後在美國能再看到你。
They all got to the place of asmbly long before the time.
他們都在約定的時間很早之前就到了集合地點。
I had heard about this tea garden long before I saw it.
在看到它很久之前我就聽說過這座茶園了。
請注意，在某些情況下，long和before並不是詞組，它們之間並沒有聯係，long是形容詞，不是副詞；before是連詞；不是介詞，因為其後接從句，例如：
It will not be long before they e back to Hong Kong.
在英語裏，與before long和long before類似區別的詞組尚有only if和if only。請看下麵的例句：
I shall do better only if I have another ce.
我將會做得更好一些，但必須再給我一次機會。
I shall do better if only I have another ce.
我將會做得更好一些，隻要我再有一次機會。
有趣的是，在某些場合下，if和only還可以拆開使用。例：
He will succeed if he only does his best.
他隻要努力而為，是會成功的。
相反，有些短語在詞序顛倒後，意義並不改變。例如：
He spent a half day on his homework.
=He spent half a day on his homework.
I dreamed about it day and night.=I dreamed about it night and day.
